So here is a summary of our week.
First night - got bitten possibly 9,000 times by sand flies and teeny mosquitoes. Swam in the pool and tried to avoid the bugs. Ate a delicious dinner in our cabana, watched Cubs highlights and fell asleep by 9pm.
First day (Tuesday 7/28) -
Got up early. Went for a kayak in the lagoon and among the mangroves. Ate a hearty breakfast by the pool while getting bitten alive on our ankles. Swam in the pool. Decided to walk into Placencia (we mistakenly thought we were 4 miles from town). We started on the beach. We had a nice drizzle cooling us off. Then we moved onto the road and the rain got stronger. We stopped at a little grocery store in Seine Bight to get some sunscreen. When we got out it was a downpour. So we sat on the porch and watched it. When it let up we started walking again. Then it rained even harder. We took shelter under a house (they are built on cement or wood stilts). We kept walking for what felt like miles and finally we hitchhiked into town. We walked around Placencia checking it out. Then we went for a swim in the ocean and sat at the Barefoot Beach Bar and played cards and drank Bellikin beers and Watermelon rum drinks.
We ate at a place called Rumfish. We had shrimp ceviche and free (yeah happy hour) nachos and some beers. Then we headed home to check on the cubs - well that was after trying to catch a bus that never came. Good thing for taxis!
